More than 6,000 households in Czechia without power this morning after overnight winds

More than 6000 households in several regions were without power this morning due to strong overnight winds. Supplies are gradually being restored, and no further faults are being reported. This is according to information from ČEZ Distribuce and EG.D. The most common cause of the faults was trees falling onto power lines and the resulting damage to sections of the lines.

The situation on the ČEZ Distribuce network was at its worst on Thursday an hour before midnight, when around 32.000 supply points were without power, with the highest numbers in the Central Bohemian, Ústí nad Labem and Hradec Králové regions. Faults were gradually repaired overnight, and around 3100 households were still without supplies this morning, ČEZ spokesperson Soňa Holingerová told the Czech News Agency (ČTK) today. The company reports more than 700 supply points without power in the Olomouc Region, and hundreds more in the Ústí nad Labem, Zlín, Pardubice and Central Bohemian regions.

„Western Bohemia and the Vysočina region remain unaffected,“ the spokesperson added.

She expects supplies to be restored this morning, with only a few exceptions.

„Due to strong overnight winds, as of this morning we have recorded 13 faults on high-voltage lines in our distribution area and around 3000 households with restricted electricity supplies,“ Roman Šperňák of distribution company EG.D told the Czech News Agency (ČTK).

The most problems this morning were in the Prostějov area, where adverse weather caused five faults and around 2000 customers were still without electricity. In South Bohemia, around 600 customers are awaiting the restoration of supplies in the Novohradské Mountains, around Český Krumlov, and in the Tábor and Dačice areas. „In South Moravia and Vysočina, only isolated network faults remain,“ Šperňák said.

According to him, company workers have been gradually repairing the faults since overnight, and no new ones are being reported. „We are working intensively to repair the existing faults and hope to restore electricity supplies as soon as possible,“ he added.

Meteorologists warned that strong winds would hit the Czech Republic on Thursday evening, with gusts reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour. As a cold front arrived and temperatures fell, icy conditions also formed in some places overnight and this morning.
