Electricity price

The electricity price on the exchange (the wholesale electricity price) can take the form of a spot-market price or a forward-market price, where so-called futures are traded (contracts for electricity delivered in a given period, for example next year).

The current electricity price on the exchange differs by delivery term. For example, the spot-market price, where electricity for delivery in the next 24 hours is traded, can differ every hour of the day, by up to hundreds of EUR/MWh. When people talk about the current electricity price, they most often mean the contract delivered for the nearest full year, i.e. this year (2026) the contract delivered in 2027.

The electricity price per kWh that customers pay on their invoice is charged by each electricity supplier at a different level. Suppliers set it according to how successfully (cheaply) they bought electricity on the exchange.

The average daily electricity price this year (2026) for the contract delivered in 2027 in the Czech Republic is 96.2 EUR/MWh (2,323 CZK/MWh). The electricity price chart below shows the development of the reference contract price for next year.

Questions and answers

Q

What is the current electricity price?

A

The current wholesale electricity price on the exchange is 99.59 EUR/MWh (2,405 CZK/MWh) (16. 6. 2026). This is a baseload futures contract delivered in the Czech Republic in 2027, which is considered the reference contract for the Czech Republic.

Q

What determines the wholesale electricity price?

A

Electricity is a commodity traded on the exchange and its price is set by current supply and demand and by generation costs, which differ by source type. The electricity price is determined by the costs of the most expensive power plant needed to cover current consumption (most often a natural-gas or hard-coal plant).

Q

How will the electricity price develop?

A

Forward contracts delivered in the coming years indicate the outlook for the electricity price. The current electricity price for next year is 99.59 EUR/MWh (2,405 CZK/MWh) and for 2028 it is 86.42 EUR/MWh (2,087 CZK/MWh). Compared with today's prices, the electricity price can therefore be expected to be substantially lower.

Q

What will the electricity price be in 2027?

A

The electricity price in 2027 can be expected at 99.59 EUR/MWh (2,405 CZK/MWh) (16. 6. 2026), as indicated by the futures contract delivered in the Czech Republic in 2027. This is the current market estimate of the wholesale electricity price, which may still change before delivery.

Q

What will the electricity price be in 2028?

A

The wholesale electricity price in 2028 is currently 86.42 EUR/MWh (2,087 CZK/MWh) (16. 6. 2026), as indicated by the futures contract delivered in the Czech Republic in 2028. This is the current market estimate of the wholesale electricity price in 2028.

Q

How does the wholesale electricity price show up in supplier prices?

A

The price of an electricity supply offered by a particular supplier should reflect the cost at which the supplier bought electricity on the wholesale market for that period. If they bought it cheaply, they can offer electricity at a lower price than their competitors.
