Electricity price

The wholesale electricity price on the exchange may be either a spot-market price or a forward-market price. Forward markets trade so-called futures—contracts for electricity to be delivered during a specified period, such as the following year.

The current wholesale electricity price varies depending on the delivery period. For example, on the spot market, where electricity is traded for delivery during the following 24 hours, the price may vary from hour to hour by as much as several hundred EUR/MWh. When people refer to the current electricity price, however, they most often mean the price of the contract for delivery in the nearest full calendar year. In 2026, this means the contract for delivery in 2027.

The price per kWh paid by customers on their electricity bills varies from one supplier to another. Suppliers set their prices partly according to how successfully—and at what cost—they purchased electricity on the wholesale market.

In the Czech Republic, the average daily price in 2026 of the contract for delivery in 2027 is 98.39 EUR/MWh (2,382 CZK/MWh). The chart below shows how the price of this benchmark contract for delivery next year has developed over time.
