According to statistics from the Czech Energy Regulatory Office, Czechia's electricity consumption rose by almost 5 % in the first quarter of this year. A total of 20.5 TWh of electricity was consumed in the first three months. Electricity generation also increased year on year.

The published statistics for the first quarter of this year show that the power sector had a strong first quarter. Both electricity generation in Czechia and consumption increased relatively significantly. The first month of this year was particularly exceptional, with gross consumption rising by almost 8 % and generation by around 11 %.

Generation at nuclear power plants remained virtually unchanged year on year, while significantly more was generated at combined-cycle gas-fired power plants. According to data published by the Czech Energy Regulatory Office, generation from combined-cycle gas sources rose by more than a quarter.

Interestingly, generation from photovoltaic power plants increased quite markedly (by 20 %), despite the fact that their installed capacity in Czechia has been stagnating for several years. Nevertheless, these are not significant figures: of the total 24 TWh generated, photovoltaics accounted for only 0.3 TWh.

Electricity consumption also increased. Gross consumption rose year on year by 0.8 TWh to reach 20.5 TWh. Household electricity consumption also increased across all regions. According to the Czech Energy Regulatory Office, the Moravian-Silesian Region had the slowest growth (at least in terms of household electricity consumption). Nevertheless, consumption there also increased by four percent.

The report also assesses hourly load and consumption profiles, including the generation mix covering maximum and minimum load during the first quarter. Maximum load in the quarter was reached on 24 January at 12:00, with total load at 11 768.0 MW. Minimum load was reached on 5 March at 3:00 (6 386 MW).
