Central Prague in Czechia hit by brief power outage this afternoon

Central Prague was hit by a power outage lasting around 20 minutes shortly after 13:00 today. It was caused by a fault at a substation, as was the outage ten days ago. Karel Hanzelka, a spokesperson for Prague Energy (PRE), told the Czech News Agency (ČTK). The outage mainly affected the New Town and Vinohrady districts.

The fault occurred at the Střed substation, just as it did during the outage on 10 October. “It is a fault in the switchgear, and the supply will be rerouted,” Hanzelka said. In such cases, other substations ensure the electricity supply. Hanzelka said that the city’s extensive grid network makes it possible to restore supplies quickly.

As it did ten days ago, the outage disrupted tram services in the city centre. Restrictions affected 11 tram routes, according to information on the Prague Public Transit Company’s website.

Czechia experienced a major power outage on 4 July. Electricity was unavailable for up to several hours in some parts of the country, and the outage affected around one million customers. The country has 6.3 million electricity supply points.
