Spot electricity prices rise by half. Households on monthly and spot tariffs will pay more

Spot electricity prices on the Czech spot market rose substantially in November. The weighted average price increased by almost half compared with the previous month, reaching 138 EUR/MWh. This is by far the highest monthly price this year. Electricity prices are responding to uncertainty on global commodity markets, particularly for natural gas.

With winter approaching, Europe’s energy sector is once again showing how vulnerable it can still be. Several negative developments affecting the wholesale price of natural gas were followed by a rise in electricity prices.

The current uncertainty is clearly visible in the day-ahead electricity market. In November this year, the average price on this market settled at 138 EUR/MWh. Just a month earlier, the average price stood at 93 EUR/MWh.

The trend has so far continued into December this year. Over the first five days of December, the price was as high as 157 EUR/MWh.
