Chinese CALB to build huge electric vehicle battery plant in Portugal

Chinese company CALB, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric vehicle batteries, will invest two billion euros (50,1 billion Kč) in a huge battery plant in Portugal. Production at the facility is expected to begin in 2028, the Chinese company announced.
The factory will be located about 100 kilometers south of Lisbon. It will produce lithium batteries with a total annual capacity of 15 gigawatt-hours, equivalent to about 187.000 electric vehicle batteries. The batteries will be destined mainly for the European market.

This will be CALB’s first factory in Europe. The facility is expected to create 1,800 jobs and, once it reaches full capacity, to contribute more than four percent to Portugal’s gross domestic product.
Together with neighboring Spain, Portugal wants to make use of its local lithium deposits. London-based Savannah Resources expects to begin commercial lithium production in 2027 at its Barroso project in northern Portugal. According to Savannah, the Barroso deposit of spodumene, a lithium-bearing mineral, is the most significant in Europe.
