Electric cars in Czechia break records, country climbs EU rankings

Electric mobility is gaining ground in Czechia, with April setting a record for newly registered electric cars. As a result, the Czech Republic is moving up from the bottom of the EU country rankings and currently ranks 22nd for the share of electric cars, ahead of Greece, Estonia, Poland, Slovakia and Croatia. This is according to an analysis published by the Transport Research Centre (CDV).

"Although we still lag significantly behind the European average, results for the first four months of this year show gradual improvement – Czechia has moved up to 22nd place among EU states for the share of newly registered electric cars. More than 68.600 electric passenger cars are currently registered in the Czech Republic, with almost 11.000 added since the start of the year. Imports of used electric cars play a significant role in this," said Pavel Havránek, director of CDV’s Mobility and Safety Division.

April was a record month for electric cars in Czechia, with people buying 1684 new cars, a year-on-year increase of 37 percent. From January to April, newly registered electric cars totalled 5123, an overall increase of 18 percent. The number of used electric cars imported from abroad grew even more sharply. People registered 4260 used electric cars in the first four months of this year, 79 percent more year on year. The most common countries of origin for used cars are Germany, the Netherlands and France.

Denmark leads the EU country rankings for electric car market share at 80,5 percent, followed by Finland at 47,4 percent and Sweden at 40,7 percent. Outside the EU, Norway is Europe’s record-holder: 98 percent of cars bought there between January and April this year were electric.
