EU registrations of passenger battery-electric cars rose 28% year on year over 11 months

Registrations of battery-electric passenger cars in the European Union rose 27.6 percent year on year from January to the end of November. Growth in Czechia was roughly the same, at 26.7 percent, but the share of electric cars in Czechia is significantly lower than in the EU. They accounted for 16.9 percent of registrations there, compared with just 5.5 percent in Czechia. Lukáš Kadula of the Transport Research Centre said this today in a press release. His figures are based on data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association and other sources, which he also compiles for the Clean Transport website.

A total of 9.86 million passenger cars were registered in the EU in the first 11 months of this year, up 1.4 percent year on year. Spain, for example, saw strong growth, while Germany stagnated and France and Italy recorded declines. Registrations in Czechia rose by six percent. Hybrid vehicles had the dominant position in the EU this year, with a share of more than a third, higher than last year. Petrol cars came second with 27 percent, although their share fell compared with last year. Battery-electric cars have a 16.9 percent share this year. The share of diesel cars continues to fall and has now dropped below ten percent. Plug-in hybrids have almost the same share this year, but their numbers grew significantly.

Registrations of battery-electric cars increased in key markets. They rose 41 percent year on year in Germany and nine percent in France, with similar growth in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In the Visegrád Four countries, the share of battery-electric car registrations has remained low for a long time. It was highest in Hungary, at over eight percent, and lowest in Slovakia, at just under five percent. By contrast, battery-electric car registrations accounted for the largest share in Denmark, at two-thirds, and more than a third in Finland, Sweden and Belgium. Outside the EU, Norway leads: people there have registered battery-electric cars for almost 96 percent of new car registrations so far this year. The figure was 23 percent in the United Kingdom and 22 percent in Switzerland.

In Czechia, individuals and companies registered 12,587 new battery-electric cars in the first 11 months of this year, giving them a 5.5 percent share, while the market shares of brands changed completely. Tesla, the market leader, fell by 49 percent, with its share dropping from a third to around 14 percent this year. Škoda became the market leader, having long held that position among cars with conventional powertrains. It has a market share of 38.6 percent this year. Its most successful model this year is the Elroq, followed by the Enyaq.
