Prague wants to use every kilowatt-hour: battery storage is next

The Prague Renewable Energy Centre (PCOE), a municipal contributory organization, has begun preparations to build battery storage facilities for electricity generated by photovoltaic power plants on the roofs of city buildings. The first will be built at the Prague City Services site in Libeň. Vít Hofman, a spokesperson for Prague City Hall, told the Czech News Agency (ČTK) in a press release today. By the end of May 2026, PCOE had completed construction of 62 photovoltaic power plants and was preparing dozens more.

The batteries will store electricity generated during periods of peak production for later use. "It is not enough simply to generate energy. It is just as important to know how to use it intelligently. Battery storage will enable Prague to make better use of electricity generated at city buildings and increase their energy self-sufficiency," Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (ODS) said.

The storage facilities will either be built alongside new photovoltaic power plants or added to existing installations. Buildings will also share electricity in accordance with the Energy Act. According to the city, PCOE has so far installed photovoltaic panels on municipal property with a capacity of 2130.5 kilowatt-peak, and aims to complete the installation of a further 1500 kilowatt-peak by the end of this year.

PCOE was established last year by renaming the former municipal organization Prague Renewable Energy Community, and is primarily responsible for installing photovoltaic panels.
