Hungary signs long-term gas supply contract with British firm Shell

Hungary has signed a ten-year gas supply contract with British energy company Shell. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said this today on the sidelines of the Gastech gas conference in Milan. He added that the gas would be transported to Hungary through pipelines in the Czech Republic and Germany. The contract is one of Budapest’s first steps towards moving away from Russian gas supplies, Bloomberg reported.
Under the agreement, Shell is expected to supply Hungary with two billion cubic metres of gas over ten years, with deliveries due to start next year. “We are negotiating further contracts with other Western suppliers, but cannot announce anything yet,” Szijjártó said.

The European Union plans to completely end imports of Russian gas by 2027. Hungary has so far criticised plans to move away from Russian gas and strengthened its energy ties with Russia after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Budapest now appears to have started looking for alternative sources of supply, Bloomberg writes.
In 2021, Hungary signed a 15-year contract under which it receives 4.5 billion cubic metres of gas a year from Russian gas company Gazprom.
