Media: Explosions in Russia knock Central Asia-Center gas pipeline out of service

Explosions today knocked the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline out of service in Russia’s Volgograd region. The Ukrinform news agency and other Ukrainian media reported this. The pipeline is owned by Russian energy giant Gazprom; the Ukrainian agency did not mention the cause of the explosions.

The affected pipeline transports natural gas from Turkmenistan through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to Russia. Gas transportation in the Volgograd area, in southwestern Russia, has been suspended indefinitely, according to Ukrinform sources. Local residents said repair crews were working at the site.

The Ukrainian agency reports that the pipeline supplies energy to several key facilities in Russia’s military-industrial complex, including an ammunition factory.

Russia has been waging war against Ukraine for three and a half years, and Ukraine has also responded with attacks on Russian infrastructure. The agency did not say whether the pipeline was damaged in one such attack.
