Russian gas exports to Europe fell 44 percent from January to April

Russian gas exports to Europe via pipelines operated by state-owned energy company Gazprom fell 44 percent year on year from January to April. Reuters calculated the figure. The decline in Russian gas exports comes after transit through Ukraine ended at the start of this year.

In the first four months of the year, Russian gas exports to Europe through the pipeline system fell to 5.7 billion cubic metres (m3), from 10.2 billion m3 in the same period of 2024.

Russian gas now reaches Europe only via Turkey. Ukraine decided not to extend its five-year transit agreement with Moscow, which expired on 1 January.

Reuters based its calculations on data from European gas transmission network operator Entsog. The data also showed that Russian gas exports via the TurkStream pipeline fell last month to 41.7 million cubic metres per day, from 45 m3 per day in March. This is roughly in line with the 41.2 million m3 recorded in April 2024.

Gazprom has not published monthly statistics on total gas exports to Europe since the start of 2023. According to Gazprom data and Reuters calculations, Russia supplied approximately 63.8 billion m3 of gas to Europe via various routes in 2022. This volume fell by 55.6 percent to 28.3 billion m3 in 2023, but rose to approximately 32 billion m3 in 2024.

At their peak in 2018 and 2019, annual Russian pipeline gas flows to Europe reached 175 to 180 billion m3.
