AGEB: Germany remained a net importer of electricity last year

Germany remained a net importer of electricity for the second year in a row last year. This is according to data published today by AGEB, a German organization that tracks energy sector statistics. Electricity imports to Germany rose by 16 percent last year, while exports fell by eight percent, according to the data.

“In 2024, imports exceeded exports by 24 billion kilowatt-hours. Germany was therefore once again a net importer of electricity,” the organization said.

The year before last, Germany ended nuclear power generation and saw a sharp decline in electricity generation from coal. As a result, it became a net importer of electricity for the first time since 2002.

AGEB’s data published today also showed that primary energy consumption in Germany fell by 1.1 percent last year, due to relatively warm weather and a weak economy. The decline in consumption nevertheless slowed significantly compared with the eight-percent drop the year before last, which Reuters attributed to high energy prices and an economic recession.

Consumption of hard coal and lignite fell by around ten percent last year. Natural gas consumption, by contrast, rose by four percent, while energy production from renewable sources increased by around one percent.
