Electricity supplies from Slovakia to Ukraine have risen sharply this year

Bratislava, Nov 21 (ČTK correspondent) – Electricity supplies from Slovakia to Ukraine have risen sharply this year, according to data from Slovak transmission system operator SEPS. Since the start of Russia’s military invasion in February 2022, Russian strikes have severely damaged Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Net electricity exports from Slovakia to Ukraine rose to 1.9 terawatt-hours in the first three quarters of this year, almost five times the volume recorded in the same period last year.

The current Slovak government describes electricity sales and humanitarian deliveries as forms of aid to Ukraine. After taking office last year, Prime Minister Robert Fico’s cabinet halted military aid to Kyiv from state stocks.

This year, Fico agreed with his Ukrainian counterpart to increase the transmission capacity of the cross-border interconnection between the Slovak and Ukrainian transmission systems. In the summer, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said Bratislava was ready to increase electricity supplies to Ukraine.

Slovakia, which connected the third unit of the Mochovce nuclear power plant to the grid last year, is no longer dependent on electricity imports, unlike in the past. In the first three quarters of this year, the country generated 11 percent more electricity than it consumed.
