New Czech minister Vlček wants to push for swift approval of energy policy

New Industry and Trade Minister Lukáš Vlček (STAN) will seek to have the updated State Energy Policy (SEP) discussed and approved swiftly. He says completing the document soon is key to the further development of the domestic energy sector. He wants to bring experts in macroeconomics and socioeconomics into the ministry. He also plans to make more visits to the regions. Vlček told reporters today after being sworn in as minister.

Vlček has already discussed the energy policy with Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS), stressing that the government should not delay its adoption. „It is a fundamental document that underpins a number of further steps,“ he said. In this context, he mentioned the development of nuclear power sources, investment in the transmission grid, legislative progress, cooperation with neighbouring countries on cross-border interconnections and other issues. „I would very much like it to be discussed by the government soon,“ he added.

The government was due to discuss the policy in the summer alongside other documents, including the National Energy and Climate Plan and the Climate Protection Policy, but ultimately postponed them. Some critics say that, particularly because of the climate documents, there is a risk of introducing emissions allowances in transport or for households, for example, and of energy costs rising. Vlček said the two documents would need further refinement. He therefore wants to separate the State Energy Policy, which builds on them in many respects, from them during deliberations.

He would like to travel more around the regions in his new role. „It suits me. More communication with people and more frequent visits to companies—that is my way of working,“ the minister said.

STAN deputy chairman Vlček was appointed to the post today by President Petr Pavel. He replaces Jozef Síkela (STAN), who is expected to become the new Czech European commissioner.
