Germany begins commercial operation at second LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven

Berlin, August 29 (CTK correspondent) - Germany today began commercial operations at its second liquefied natural gas terminal in Wilhelmshaven in the northwest of the country. Reuters reported this, citing state-owned company Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET).

Floating LNG storage and regasification units, known by the English acronym FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit), are operating in Brunsbüttel, Stade and at two sites in Wilhelmshaven. Germany began building LNG terminals in 2022 in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The terminals enabled the country to end its dependence on Russian gas.

The second terminal at the port of Wilhelmshaven began commercial operations today after several months of trial operation. "Regular operation of the Wilhelmshaven 2 terminal with the 'Excelsior' floating storage and regasification unit can now help secure supplies and fill gas storage facilities ahead of the next heating season," said DET Chief Executive Peter Röttgen.

DET is responsible for marketing and operating the floating terminals, which convert liquefied natural gas back into gas and feed it into the German gas network.
