Greece signs deal to import US LNG to replace Russian gas in Europe

Greece today signed a deal to import 700 million cubic metres of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States annually. US gas is intended to replace Russian supplies to Europe. It will be transported from Greece to northern European countries and also to Ukraine, Reuters reports.

US supplies will begin flowing in 2030 under the first long-term deal between Athens and Washington. The agreement runs for 20 years.

The European Union approved a ban on imports of Russian LNG from 2027 several weeks ago. The move is a response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The EU committed in July, by concluding a trade deal with the administration of US President Donald Trump, to buy US oil, nuclear technologies and LNG worth $250 billion (5.2 trillion Kč) annually over the next three years.

US representatives welcomed the deal at an energy conference in Athens. On Thursday, they said they wanted to replace “every molecule” of Russian gas in western Europe in the coming years.

“Greece was at the end of the pipeline of an energy system controlled by Russia. Today, Greece is becoming a starting point, a gateway to Europe for American energy trade,” US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said at a press conference.
