Ukraine agrees to increase LNG imports from US via Poland's Orlen

Ukraine’s state-owned gas company Naftogaz has agreed to increase imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States via Polish energy group Orlen and US partners. Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretskyi said the newly agreed deliveries would amount to at least 300 million cubic metres. The company is seeking to secure enough gas for the winter season as Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continues to face attacks from Russia, Reuters reported.

Orlen said the agreement was signed at a conference on transatlantic energy cooperation, which was also attended by Polish Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka. “The agreement will enable a significant volume of gas to be imported from the United States to Ukraine and pave the way for further initiatives of this kind, which could support other countries in Central and Eastern Europe,” it added.

Poland’s Orlen began supplying US LNG to Ukraine this year. Poland’s Ministry of Energy said today that the new agreement would increase total deliveries to nearly one billion cubic metres. The gas is shipped from the US to terminals in Poland and Lithuania and then transported to Ukraine, Reuters reported.

Orlen Group also includes Orlen Unipetrol, the largest refining and petrochemical company in Czechia.
