Gas consumption in Czechia fell by eight percent year on year in the first half, mainly due to weather

Gas consumption in Czechia continues to fall. In the first half of this year, Czechs consumed 38.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of gas, almost eight percent less year on year. The main reason for the decline was warm weather; adjusted for temperature effects, the year-on-year drop would otherwise have been one percent. This is according to statistics from the Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ).

Gas consumption has been falling since the energy crisis broke out in 2022. It has now declined for 12 consecutive quarters year on year.

So far, Czechs have made the biggest savings compared with last year in April, when consumption fell by almost 22 percent year on year. In January, by contrast, consumption rose by 18 percent compared with the start of last year. However, it was the only calendar month this year in which gas use increased compared with last year. Consumption fell in all the other months.

According to the statistics, outdoor temperatures have had a significant impact on this year’s consumption and its comparison with last year. This year, temperatures were about 2.5 degrees higher year on year. Adjusted for temperature effects, gas consumption in the first half fell by only a little over one percent compared with last year.

Gas consumption in Czechia fell throughout last year too, due to warm weather and savings by consumers. Last year’s total consumption was therefore the lowest since 1992, with Czechs consuming 6.76 billion cubic metres of gas, 10.4 percent less year on year.
