TASS: Serbia agrees to extend Russian gas supply contract

Moscow and Belgrade have agreed to extend the contract for Russian gas supplies to Serbia until the end of September. The Russian news agency TASS reported this today, citing Dušan Bajatović, head of Serbia’s state gas company Srbijagas.

Serbia is heavily dependent on natural gas from Russia, but the supply agreement expired in March. Russia has supplied gas to Serbia via the TurkStream pipeline since 2021. Last year, these supplies amounted to around three billion cubic metres, Reuters reported.

Serbia is a candidate for membership of the European Union, but at the same time maintains friendly relations with Moscow, and a significant proportion of Serbs view Russia positively. Although its government condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the UN, it has not joined sanctions against Russia. The EU plans to end all remaining imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić attended a military parade in Moscow this month marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazism. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that a new gas supply contract was also discussed on that occasion.
