Britain selects Rolls-Royce SMR as supplier of small modular reactors

Britain has selected British company Rolls-Royce SMR as the supplier of small modular reactors, whose construction it plans to invest 2.5 billion pounds (roughly CZK 73 billion) in over the next four years. The British government announced this today. Czech company ČEZ is working with Rolls-Royce SMR to develop modular reactors. This year, ČEZ became a shareholder in the British company and is expected to gradually acquire a stake of around one-fifth.

ČEZ plans to build modular reactors with a combined capacity of three gigawatts in the Czech Republic by 2050 in cooperation with Rolls-Royce SMR. Representatives of both companies signed a strategic cooperation agreement last October.

"Rolls-Royce SMR offers us the best terms in terms of both cooperation and technology. Its victory in the British competition to build small modular reactors confirms the steps we took last October," said Daniel Beneš, chairman of the board and CEO of ČEZ.

ČEZ plans to build its first small modular reactor next to the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant around the mid-2030s. The company is currently assessing other locations.
