China begins preparatory work for construction of upgraded Hualong One 2.0 reactor

In China’s Zhejiang province, engineers have begun preparatory work for the second phase of the Jinqimen nuclear power plant. The plant’s first phase, consisting of two Hualong units, has been under construction at the site since last August. The second phase will also see two nuclear units built, this time using the upgraded Hualong One 2.0 design. The nuclear power plant will have a total installed capacity of 7.2 GW and supply around 55 TWh to the grid each year.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced that it has begun preparatory work on the first demonstration unit of the Hualong One 2.0 type. The pair of new units, based on the Hualong One reactor design, will be built at the Jinqimen nuclear power plant as its second phase. Each unit has an installed capacity of 1200 MW (gross), and construction will take up to five years after it officially begins.
