ENEC and ADNOC join forces to use SMRs to diversify the UAE energy sector

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and state-owned energy group ADNOC have agreed to jointly explore the use of advanced nuclear technologies. One area of interest is small modular reactors (SMRs), which are expected to form part of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) energy diversification strategy. The plan also includes using waste heat from the Barakah nuclear power plant in oil and gas extraction operations managed by ADNOC.
The strategic agreement includes a detailed technical and economic assessment aimed at identifying the nuclear reactor technologies best suited to ADNOC’s needs. ENEC will draw on its experience in evaluating pilot energy projects and its knowledge of technologies under development. The agreement also includes feasibility studies focused on the potential uses of excess heat from the Barakah nuclear power plant. The aim is to propose technologies that could be implemented through current or future pilot projects.

Ahmed Al Mazrouei, ENEC’s vice president of nuclear research and development, described the collaboration as a significant step forward in advancing new technologies and supporting development in the UAE’s energy sector.
“By focusing on advanced nuclear innovation and exploring new ways to use waste heat for industrial applications, we are strengthening the UAE’s green economy. Together with ADNOC, we will draw on our technical capabilities and expertise to identify and develop nuclear solutions that will strengthen energy security and sustainability,” Mazrouei said.
ENEC operates the Barakah nuclear power plant, whose fourth and final unit entered commercial operation in September. The plant now generates around 40 TWh of electricity annually. Output from the nuclear power plant covers approximately 25% of the UAE’s total electricity consumption and saves 22.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
ADNOC and the UAE Energy Strategy 2050
Ali Al Rawahi, ADNOC’s senior vice president of technology and innovation, emphasized that the partnership is focused on developing innovative energy solutions that improve operational efficiency.
“As part of our collaboration with ENEC, we will explore the deployment of small modular reactors. Our partnership reaffirms our shared commitment to developing reliable, clean energy sources and breakthrough technologies that reduce our carbon footprint,” Al Rawahi said.
Founded in 1971, ADNOC is an energy group with integrated businesses across the energy value chain. It is one of the world’s largest oil and gas producers. The group has allocated USD 23 billion to carbon-reduction initiatives and investment in new energy. Its goals include achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 and zero methane emissions by 2030.

The new collaboration is fully aligned with the United Arab Emirates’ Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to increase the share of clean energy sources and improve energy efficiency across the country.
