EU imposes sanctions on 41 more ships from Russia's shadow fleet

The European Union has imposed sanctions on 41 more ships from the so-called Russian shadow fleet. The EU Council announced this today. This brings the total number of these vessels under sanctions to almost 600. Britain also announced new anti-Russian sanctions today.

The sanctioned ships are banned from entering ports in EU countries and can no longer use a wide range of maritime services.

The EU has so far imposed 19 packages of sanctions on Russia, but Moscow has managed to adapt to most of the measures. Above all, it continues to sell millions of barrels of oil to India and China, albeit at discounts to global prices, Reuters reported. Much of this oil is transported with the help of the so-called shadow fleet.

On Monday, the EU also imposed sanctions on companies and individuals it accuses of transporting Russian oil. Those targeted include Canadian-Pakistani oil trader and Mercantile & Maritime chief executive Murtaza Lakhani.

Oil sales are an important source of revenue for Russia, helping to fund its war against Ukraine, which has been going on for almost four years. The so-called Russian shadow fleet transports two-thirds of Russia's oil exports. It consists of hundreds of tankers operated outside Western oversight and maritime regulations.

Britain also announced further sanctions targeting Russia's oil industry today. London has added 24 individuals and other entities to its sanctions regime, including Russian oil companies Tatneft and Russneft.
