India to buy Venezuelan oil, Trump says

US President Donald Trump said India will buy Venezuelan oil, Reuters reported. Last year, Trump imposed additional tariffs on India over its imports of Russian oil.

"We've already made the deal, the concept of the deal," Trump told reporters on Tuesday evening aboard Air Force One while travelling to Florida.

Trump said China is also welcome to strike a deal with the US to buy Venezuelan oil.

In early January, US special forces seized Venezuelan authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas. He and his wife are now facing charges of narco-terrorism in New York. After Maduro's abduction, Delcy Rodríguez, who previously served as vice president, became interim president. The United States is cooperating with her for now.

After Maduro's capture, Trump announced that the US would process Venezuelan oil and sell it on international markets. According to him, the deal with Caracas provides for up to 50 million barrels, roughly two months of Venezuelan production. The proceeds will be held in accounts under US control, and the US will also decide how they are used.

Last August, in response to India's imports of Russian oil, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on imports of Indian goods into the US. Last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signalled that the tariff could be lifted, saying India had sharply reduced its imports from Russia.

Trump's statement came a day after the United States informed New Delhi that it could soon resume purchases of Venezuelan oil to replace lost imports of Russian oil, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
