Modi reportedly assured Trump that India will stop buying Russian oil

US President Donald Trump said today that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that his country would no longer buy Russian oil. He made the remarks at a press conference at the White House, adding that now it was time for China to do the same.

"I was not happy that India was buying (Russian) oil, and he assured me today that they will not buy oil from Russia. That's a big step," Trump said, adding that New Delhi would stop buying it in the near future.

Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on goods from India, a longstanding US ally, over its purchases of Russian oil.

The US president has repeatedly urged European allies to also impose high tariffs on goods from India and China as part of the pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine. If they do so, he says he is prepared to impose sanctions on Moscow, which he has not yet done.

Reuters reported in August that India saved $17 billion (360 billion Kč) by increasing imports of discounted Russian oil after Russia launched its military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It predicted, however, that high US tariffs on imports into the United States would quickly wipe out those gains.
