Interest in electricity sharing in Czechia has been gradually rising with the arrival of spring. The number of registered participants has exceeded 20.000, who have shared nearly 6225 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity among themselves since last autumn. This corresponds to the monthly consumption of around 2000 households. Participants used almost half of this volume during March alone. This follows from statistics published by the Electricity Data Centre (EDC). Those interested in electricity sharing have been able to register with the centre since last August, while actual sharing has been operating since September.

„The volume of shared electricity has been growing exponentially since the start of the year. The potential of thousands of generation and consumption points registered in the preceding months has thus fully materialised, combined with the arrival of sunny spring days,“ said Petr Kusý, chairman of the EDC board of directors.

After the first quarter of this year, the centre records 20.581 registered users.

Kusý also pointed to the growing number of user inquiries directed to the EDC call centre. „We also see a major shift in the topics of the inquiries. Half a year ago, questions about the registration process or general requirements for sharing predominated; now they are more informed operational questions, for example about how to correctly set allocations or assess the benefits,“ he said.

Within sharing groups, the centre records 9102 active customers and 465 apartment buildings. In the case of so-called energy communities, it has registered 15 entities so far. The Energy Regulatory Office, with which communities must register first, currently records several dozen of them.

Electricity sharing in Czechia was introduced by the amendment to the Energy Act adopted the year before last. Sharing is possible, for example, within communities or by transferring self-generated electricity to another delivery point, such as from a weekend cottage to an apartment. The EDC began operations at the start of last August, with sharing effectively starting in September 2024.

The Electricity Data Centre currently operates in a temporary mode, allowing electricity sharing within community energy among active customers, electricity producers and in energy communities. Full operation, which will also include electricity storage and aggregation services, is expected from mid-2026.
