23,000 participants registered for electricity sharing in Czechia, interest hit record in April

Nearly 23,000 participants registered with the Electroenergy Data Center (EDC) can currently share electricity in Czechia. Since the beginning of last September, they have shared more than ten gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, equivalent to the monthly consumption of more than 3,000 households. In a record-breaking April, sharing rose by more than 150 percent compared with the previous month, reaching 4.68 GWh. The Czech News Agency (ČTK) was informed of this today by the EDC. Those interested in sharing electricity have been able to register with the center since August, while actual sharing has been operating since September.
According to the EDC, the increase in electricity sharing is being driven not only by favorable weather, but above all by the steady growth in the number of interested participants. The total number of registrations increased by more than 2,000 over the past month, reaching 22,880 at the end of April. “We are also seeing a significant increase in the number of generation and consumption points. Their number has nearly doubled since the beginning of the year, and by the end of April, 11,096 generation points and 15,549 consumption points were connected to the EDC system,” Kusý noted.
Among sharing groups, the EDC recorded the largest number of so-called active customers at the end of April (11,112), followed by 543 apartment buildings and 24 energy communities. Registering an energy community is more administratively demanding and also involves registration with the Czech Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ). “Given that the ERÚ has already registered several dozen of these communities, we expect a significant increase in this sharing group in the coming weeks as well,” Kusý added.

Electricity sharing in Czechia was introduced by an amendment to the Energy Act passed the year before last. Sharing is possible, for example, within communities, or by using self-generated electricity at another delivery point, such as transferring it from a country cottage to an apartment. The EDC began operating in early August last year, and sharing actually went live in September 2024.
The Electroenergy Data Center is currently operating in a temporary mode that enables electricity sharing as part of community energy among active customers, electricity producers and energy communities. Full operation, which will also include electricity storage and aggregation services, is expected to begin in mid-2026.
