Slovakia and Hungary may soon say whether they can agree on Danube project

Slovakia and Hungary are close to announcing whether they can reach an agreement in their long-running dispute over the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros system of waterworks on the Danube. Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba told reporters today. The Slovak opposition rejected Taraba’s earlier claim that, under the current treaty, Hungary is entitled to receive half of the electricity generated free of charge by the Slovak Gabčíkovo hydroelectric plant, the country’s largest hydropower station with an installed capacity of 720 megawatts. Hungary withdrew years ago from building its part of the joint project.
