Czech biomass as a local resource: a path to energy self-sufficiency and sustainability

At a time of rising energy prices and efforts to reduce the carbon footprint, biomass is a key resource for a sustainable future. Its use helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, supports regional employment and contributes to energy self-sufficiency. What are the main benefits of biomass, where does it come from, and how can it be used effectively?

Advantages of biomass over natural gas

Natural gas is often presented as a cleaner alternative to coal, but its composition and greenhouse gas emissions paint a different picture. The primary component of natural gas is methane, which has a greenhouse effect up to thirty times stronger than that of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Emissions are produced not only when it is burned, but also during extraction and transport. Physical losses of natural gas into the atmosphere, which can amount to around 3 % of the supplied volume, have twice the climate impact of its use for energy. Once these losses are taken into account, the resulting greenhouse effect is even greater than that of coal.

By contrast, biomass is carbon neutral: burning it releases only as much carbon dioxide as the plants absorbed while growing. Its use therefore helps achieve real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and the overall environmental burden.

Another major difference is energy independence. Natural gas is often imported from distant regions. Biomass, however, comes from organic materials available locally, primarily wood, plant residues, agricultural crops or biological waste. Its use therefore reduces economic and political dependence on external suppliers.

Supporting the regional economy

Using locally sourced biomass not only benefits the environment, but also supports regional employment. Its production and processing create jobs in forestry, agriculture and industry. It also enables the efficient use of agricultural land, which can be returned to food-crop production if needed.

Use biomass efficiently with EP Resources

EP Resources has long specialised in purchasing, processing and supplying biomass as an alternative fuel. Each year, it delivers hundreds of thousands of tonnes of wood chips and other biomass products to energy facilities across Czechia and Central Europe.

Thanks to modern technologies and efficient logistics, EP Resources can offer its partners reliable and sustainable solutions. The company manages the entire process, from purchasing raw materials and processing them to delivering them to district heating plants and power stations.

Biomass as a sustainable resource

As the focus on environmental protection and self-sufficiency grows, biomass is becoming an important part of the energy mix. If you are looking for an efficient and sustainable solution for your business, municipality, forest land or energy facility, EP Resources can help you find the best way to use local biomass.
