Electricity consumption in Czechia fell 2.5% year on year in the first half, partly due to weather

Electricity consumption in Czechia continues to fall. In the first half of this year, Czechs cut their electricity consumption by 2.5 percent year on year to 29.4 terawatt-hours (TWh). Warmer weather has been a key factor in reducing consumption this year. This is according to statistics from the Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ). Gas consumption has fallen even more sharply, by nearly eight percent year on year in the first half, to 38.2 TWh.

According to the office’s data, however, the year began with a widespread increase in consumption. In January, electricity consumption rose by five percent year on year. This was due to cold weather in the first month of the year. In the following months, consumption gradually fell, including in year-on-year comparisons. Once again, the reason was the weather, which was warmer than the average temperature.

Compared with last year, Czechs have so far made the biggest cuts in March, when they reduced electricity consumption by 6.5 percent, the data show.

Efforts to reduce energy consumption in Czechia have continued for two years. According to experts, in addition to the weather, rising energy prices have also contributed significantly. Savings have been evident across all categories of consumers. Last year, electricity consumption in Czechia was at its lowest level in 14 years. Net consumption amounted to 57.8 TWh of electricity, down 4.1 percent year on year, the ERÚ said earlier.
