Czech Republic to join European intraday electricity market

On 19 November, the Czech Republic will join the European intraday electricity market along with six other countries. The project, called Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC), which succeeds the XBID project, will then include 21 European countries.

The group of seven countries, comprising the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Croatia, is due to join 14 European countries that already have interconnected intraday electricity markets on 19 November as part of the so-called second wave of Local Implementation Projects.

“Following the launch, only implicit allocation of intraday cross-border transmission capacity will take place on the Czech-German, Czech-Austrian and Czech-Polish borders. Pan-European integration of intraday electricity markets is a key element in completing the European internal energy market,”explains Czech transmission system operator ČEPS, a.s., in a press release.

The Czech Republic is also represented in the SIDC project by electricity market operator OTE, a.s., which, among other things, organises Czech short-term electricity markets.

According to the published project press release, the SIDC solution is based on a common central IT system comprising three modules: the Shared
Order Book (SOB), Capacity Management Module (CMM) and Shipping Module (SM).

“The central solution enables orders submitted by market participants in one country to be matched with orders submitted by market participants in any other interconnected country, provided that cross-border capacity is available for energy transmission between the relevant zones. The SIDC solution supports implicit continuous trading as well as explicit cross-border trading (where the relevant national regulatory authorities decide locally) and is fully in line with the EU target model for an integrated intraday electricity market.” – from the project press release.
