Companies can conclude energy efficiency agreements with the Czech state. They are to help reduce energy consumption by 23 PJ/year

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT) has prepared a Strategic Declaration / Voluntary Agreement on achieving energy efficiency. According to the MIT, entities across the business sector that wish to contribute to meeting targets for improving energy efficiency can join the agreement. According to the draft National Energy and Climate Plan of the Czech Republic (NECP), voluntary agreements should deliver up to 23,2 PJ/year of new energy savings by 2030.

The voluntary agreements, which companies active in the energy market can conclude with the MIT as the regulatory body, were prepared by the MIT in cooperation with the Confederation of Industry and Transport of the Czech Republic, the Czech Gas Association and the Czech Association of Regulated Electricity Companies.

“Only the joint efforts of the state, entities in the energy services market and other businesses will help improve energy efficiency without having a significant impact on final energy consumers. I would therefore like to call not only on energy distribution and trading companies, but on all socially responsible entrepreneurs, to join the strategic declaration and demonstrate their willingness to participate in sustainable energy consumption and improving energy efficiency through a specific agreement concluded with the MIT,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček

The MIT recalled that, in view of climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Czech Republic must save 0,8 % of final energy consumption each year between 2021 and 2030. In absolute terms, this means new annual savings of 8,4 PJ/year and total new savings of 84 PJ/year by 2030.

Voluntary agreements are expected to be one of the main measures for achieving this target, delivering new savings of 23,2 PJ/year by 2030 according to the NECP. According to the NECP, this is a theoretical potential declared as achievable by representatives of the entities concerned (distribution companies and energy traders in the gas, electricity and heating sectors). Its use depends on the participation of most major market players in the scheme.

“The agreements can be concluded immediately. All that is needed is to familiarise yourself with the model version on the www.mpo.cz website and contact our ministry with an idea of the form in which the company would like to conclude it. Once agreement is reached on the specific wording, it can be concluded almost immediately,” added René Neděla, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade for Energy.
