One of the Czech Republic’s largest battery storage facilities to be built in Tušimice

The Transport and Energy Construction Authority (DESU) has approved the construction of two battery storage facilities in Tušimice. The projects belong to FVE Sever alfa s.r.o. and FVE Sever beta s.r.o., which are part of the Czech Energy Parks a.s. group. Together, the two projects are to offer more than 200 MW of capacity and 400 MWh of storage capacity, many times exceeding the parameters of existing battery storage facilities in the Czech Republic.
According to information published in the project permit decision, the battery storage facilities, which are to be connected to the transmission system, are intended, among other things, for “storing surplus electricity production generated elsewhere, balancing services and supplying existing generating facilities in the area”. Each of the FVE Sever alfa-BESS and FVE Sever beta-BESS projects is to have installed capacity of around 100 MW and storage capacity of 200 MWh. This would place them among the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the Czech Republic.
The companies set to carry out construction of the storage facilities belong to the Czech Energy Parks a.s. group, which owns several companies, some of which have contracts with the town of Kadaň, whose cadastral area includes Tušimice. One of these projects is also listed on the website of ADI. The permit also lists PDL transformation, s.r.o., which is likewise owned by Czech Energy Parks a.s.
Technical details
The solution includes separate containers with high- and low-voltage switchgear, liquid battery cooling using a mixture of water and ethylene glycol, six battery racks with a total of 48 battery blocks, and a centralised FusionSolar fire protection system that monitors temperature and smoke concentration in real time and automatically activates alarms and fire-suppression mechanisms in the event of a risk.
According to the issued permit, the individual BESS modules are to have installed capacity of 2.5 MW and capacity of around 5 MWh. The system includes the GEN-BAT-5015 kWh battery module, transformer modules rated at 9,000 and 6,600 kVA, GEN-PS8500 kVA inverters and 22/0.8 kV transformers.
Tušimice
The storage facility is to extend across several plots in the Tušimice cadastral area. These have long been among the Czech Republic’s most important energy locations. For decades, the area was associated with coal-fired power generation and extensive generation infrastructure, which now provides a foundation for new renewable energy and energy storage projects.
Similar projects are intended to help stabilise the grid and make use of existing transmission capacity. Tušimice is thus gradually transforming from a traditional energy hub into something of a testing ground for the Czech energy transition.
