Power-to-gas: Largest project expected to launch in 2023, but lacks political support

German transmission system operator Amprion and gas transmission system operator Open Grid Europe are planning to build a new Power-to-Gas project with a total installed capacity of 100 MW. Total project costs are expected to reach EUR 150 million.

Transmission system operator Amprion and gas transmission system operator Open Grid Europe have decided to „take into their own hands“ the expected development of electricity storage. Contrary to the general assumption that battery storage will play the main role in electricity storage, they have decided to develop a Power-to-Gas (P2G) project.

If completed, the project would be the largest of its kind in terms of installed capacity. Total capacity is planned at 100 MW, with investment costs of around EUR 150 million.

However, the project is still at a relatively early stage. According to statements by both project participants, it has not yet reached the permit application stage. Although the project is already prepared for the permitting process, it is still awaiting sufficient political support. Given the importance of electricity storage in Germany and its role in future development, such support can nevertheless be expected.

“If we were to receive political support for the project now, it could be expected to launch in 2023,” said Amprion technical director Klaus Kleinekorte.

Cooperation between gas and electricity transmission systems needs to improve

System operators TenneT and Gasunie are also calling for deeper cooperation. In their view, the two systems can work together very effectively by storing surplus electricity in the gas system using P2G technology. Closer cooperation would make it possible to better manage not only seasonal fluctuations through storage facilities, but also short-term fluctuations.

The two operators further add that cooperation with industry and political representatives is essential.A study by TenneT and Gasunie reaches virtually the same conclusion as the project of the two companies mentioned above. Further development of P2G technology requires the creation of a regulatory framework governing the operation of P2G in the grid.
