The Czech flexibility market is changing. SAF Conference 2026 will address questions that will determine how it works

Independent flexibility aggregators may operate in Czechia from September. And from January 2027, a new tariff structure will take effect, changing the rules for large consumers and storage operators alike. Just as the new conditions are beginning to take shape in practice, SAF Conference: Storage and Flexibility 2026 will be held in Prague on 20 October.

Who will manage flexibility—and who will provide it?

The first session, Flexibility as a priority: markets, tariffs and grid management, will focus on what the new rules mean for how the market works.

Independent aggregation opens the door to new business models, but it also raises very practical questions: how will flexibility be valued, how will cooperation between the aggregator, trader and customer work, what services will be available to the grid, and how will the new tariff environment affect the economics of flexibility?

The debate will therefore focus on the relationship between the market value of flexibility and the physical needs of the electricity system.

BESS without rose-tinted glasses: the business case, not installed capacity, will decide

The power and capacity of battery energy storage systems are growing rapidly, but that alone says nothing about the economics of a project.

Investors are increasingly focused on how a battery energy storage system (BESS) will actually generate revenue and how stable that revenue will be over time. A BESS can reduce electricity costs, optimise on-site generation, take advantage of market price differences or provide other market services. The ability to choose the most economically advantageous use for the battery at any given moment is at the heart of so-called revenue stacking.

The availability of grid connections is also a factor in the investment equation. Distribution system operators themselves point out that available capacity cannot be assessed using a single figure: flows into the transmission system and the impact of a specific project on the grid also matter. These issues will all be addressed in the second conference session.

Flexibility is not synonymous with batteries

The third session, Flexibility beyond industry, will take the discussion beyond battery storage.

The new tariff structure from 2027 will put greater emphasis on the capacity a company has reserved and how it actually uses the grid. For large consumers, the ability to manage consumption, shift it over time or combine operational controls with storage may therefore become increasingly valuable.

This brings flexibility directly into discussions about energy costs, production management and business competitiveness. A broader question also remains open: where else can flexibility be found in the Czech electricity system, and how can it be brought to market? Can it also be found in households?

The more batteries there are, the more important security becomes

The rapid growth of BESS raises another issue that cannot be overlooked: the security and resilience of energy infrastructure.

A battery storage system is more than an investment asset. If it provides balancing services or other grid services, it becomes part of the infrastructure on whose reliable operation the electricity system depends.

The fourth session, Security: BESS as an asset for strategic infrastructure, will therefore examine battery system security in a broader context—from technical and fire protection to operational standards and the role of these systems in energy resilience.

Four topics coming together right now

SAF Conference: Storage and Flexibility 2026 will take place on 20 October 2026 at Hotel Stages in Prague. It is organised by the Association of Aggregators and Flexibility Providers (SAF), which is part of the AKU-BAT Association.

The conference will bring together grid operators, aggregators, traders, investors and BESS operators, industrial companies, regulators and other market participants to discuss four topics whose rules are changing right now.
