The Energy Olympiad connects secondary school students with the world of energy and gives them the opportunity not only to test their knowledge, but above all to develop their own solutions to current energy challenges. The most successful teams from the school round advance to the final. During the two-day program at FEL CTU, they work on their projects, consult with industry experts and then present them to a professional jury.
“When we founded the Energy Olympiad in 2018, it was hard to imagine that over nine editions we would surpass 10,000 student participations. Above all, this confirms that secondary school students have a lasting interest in energy. Every year, they also show us that they can come up with very high-quality and often surprising solutions,” says Adéla Holasová, founder of the Energy Olympiad.
From energy sharing to batteries and storage in mines
The breadth of topics tackled by the competitors is reflected in the results of last year’s edition. The winning team was Prachovky from the Bishop’s Grammar School in Brno, with a proposal for an information campaign to explain energy sharing and consumption flexibility to the public. Other finalists addressed topics such as the use of retired electric vehicle batteries, energy self-sufficiency in cities and seasonal energy storage in mine shafts.
“The Energy Olympiad clearly shows how the energy sector itself is changing. It is no longer just about energy generation and transmission. Artificial intelligence, data management, modern control methods and smart grids are playing an increasingly important role. The links between energy and other technology fields are opening up opportunities for new solutions. It is great to see secondary school students already finding them,” says prof. Petr Páta, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at CTU.
The final includes expert talks and mentoring from specialists in energy companies and academia. The two days at FEL CTU also allow students to experience a technical university and explore further study options in energy-related fields. In addition to prizes, the competition winners may also be offered the opportunity to study at FEL CTU without taking an entrance exam.
About the Energy Olympiad
The Energy Olympiad was established in 2018 in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, with the aim of improving energy literacy among young people, encouraging interest in technical fields and connecting secondary school students with industry experts. Every year, hundreds of teams from across Czechia take part, and the national final is traditionally hosted by FEL CTU. The competition’s general partner is ČEPS, a.s. The Energy Olympiad is held under the auspices of the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The event’s expert partners are Gasnet, ČEZ Group, ŠKO-ENERGO, E.ON Czech Republic, the Energy Regulatory Office, innogy Czech Republic, Microsoft CZ, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication of Brno University of Technology, and the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, VSB–Technical University of Ostrava.
