Czech Industry Ministry: State to support renewable heating with nearly CZK 10bn

The state will support the development of heating from renewable energy sources with around CZK 9.5 billion. The European Commission has cleared the Czech programme. The funding is expected to go mainly towards the installation of new biomass-fired renewable heat generation facilities, creating capacity with a total output of around 345 megawatts (MW). The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MPO) informed ČTK of this today in a press release.

„Renewable energy sources will be the foundation of decarbonisation and energy security across Europe. Thanks to their development, we will have lower energy costs and our energy independence will also be strengthened. I am therefore pleased that the European Commission has approved our operating support programme, which will support district heating based on green energy,” said Industry and Trade Minister Jozef Síkela (STAN).

The programme’s main objective is to install new biomass-fired renewable heat generation facilities with capacity above 500 kW. The ministry will provide operating support in the form of a so-called green bonus for each gigajoule of heat supplied to the heat distribution system.

„At this point, it can be expected that the scheme could support the installation of up to approximately 345 MW of renewable heat generation capacity,” said René Neděla, deputy director general of the MPO’s energy and nuclear resources section.

According to the ministry, the measure is intended to contribute to fulfilling the Czech National Energy and Climate Plan and the EU’s strategic goals for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

In cooperation with the Office for the Protection of Competition and the Energy Regulatory Office, the MPO is also continuing work on completing notification procedures for further support schemes, including operating support for biomethane and support for the heating sector.
