GasNet distributed over 4.2 billion cubic metres of gas in Czechia during the heating season, up 3.4% year on year

Total gas consumption during the 2025/2026 heating season in GasNet’s distribution area exceeded 4.2 billion cubic metres. Households and businesses consumed 45.4 TWh of energy, 3.4% more than in the 2024/2025 season. The figures come from GasNet, the country’s largest gas distributor. Colder weather was the main factor behind the higher gas consumption.
Although households and businesses are still using heating to some extent, the main rush is now behind the gas industry. The heating season in the gas sector runs every year from 1 October to 31 March. During this season, customers in GasNet’s distribution area consumed a total of 4 202 583 862 m3 of gas. GasNet supplied its customers with a total of 45.4 TWh of energy. Last year, the figure was 43.9 TWh.Consumption rose across all segments. Households consumed 14.6 TWh, while small customers used 7.5 TWh. Medium-sized and large customers, including heat plants and industrial manufacturers, also needed more gas. Consumption in this segment reached 23.3 TWh. From the perspective of operating the gas distribution system, the heating season is always the busiest period.
„Colder weather was the main factor behind the increase in consumption. Compared with the previous heating season, the average temperature was 0.4 degrees Celsius lower. This was reflected in higher gas consumption. The coldest weather came at the beginning of this year, when we distributed more than 37 million cubic metres a day during the second week of January. Average daily consumption during the heating season is around 21 million cubic metres,“ says Andrzej Martynek, CEO of the GasNet Group.
The GasNet Group accounts for around 85% of total natural gas distribution in the country. Since January this year, the group has also included its subsidiary Gas Distribution, which distributes gas in South Bohemia. Distribution there reached around 2.2 TWh during the 2025/2026 heating season.
„Our gas network has demonstrated a high level of resilience over the long term and the ability to reliably deliver large volumes of energy exactly when customers need it. It also handles major demand fluctuations during frosts without difficulty, when the need for heating gas rises sharply. In winter, households, schools, public offices, hospitals, care homes, businesses and industrial companies rely on us,“ adds Andrzej Martynek.
First quarter of 2026: biomethane share grows, gas demand remains stable
A comparison of consumption by calendar year shows the same increase. In the first quarter of this year, consumption in GasNet’s distribution area totalled 24.3 TWh. This represents a year-on-year increase of 3.4%; in the first quarter of 2025, GasNet distributed a total of 23.5 TWh.
Alongside natural gas, the share of biomethane in the network is also growing. During the first three months of this year, distribution of the gas reached 36 723 MWh, up 13.3% year on year. By increasing the share of locally produced biomethane in the gas network, GasNet strengthens energy security and reduces the energy sector’s emissions footprint.
GasNet also reports a steadily rising number of applicants seeking connection to the gas distribution system. In the first quarter of the year, GasNet received 2 885 connection applications, compared with 2 778 last year. That is an increase of almost 4% year on year.
