Swedish Alleima secures second order for NuScale SMR components

Swedish company Alleima has announced that it has received a second order from South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility. The order covers approximately 200 kilometers of steam generator tubes for small modular reactors (SMRs) developed by NuScale Power.
In June 2023, Alleima received a similar order from Doosan Enerbility to supply steam generator tubes for one of the first NuScale VOYGR SMR modules. Deliveries were scheduled for 2024, and according to Alleima, the NuScale Power modules are expected to begin operating in 2029.
NuScale Power Module technology
The NuScale Power Module is a pressurized water reactor (PWR) that integrates all the components for steam generation and heat exchange into a single compact unit. One module has a capacity of 77 MWe and, in September 2020, became the first SMR design to receive approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

NuScale offers its modules as part of VOYGR power plants. The VOYGR-12 configuration, with twelve modules, can have an installed capacity of up to 924 MWe. Four- and six-module options, as well as other configurations tailored to specific requirements, are also available to customers. NuScale’s SMR is based on proven PWR technology, for which Alleima supplies its “high-quality alloys” for steam generator tubes.
Development of NuScale SMR projects
In November 2023, NuScale and Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems mutually agreed to terminate the Carbon Free Power Project (CFPP), which was to include six NuScale modules with a total capacity of 462 MWe. The project was scheduled for completion in 2029.
In March 2023, NuScale placed its first order with Doosan Enerbility for the manufacture of the upper section of a reactor pressure vessel, a long-lead item for the CFPP. The company now plans to transfer these modules to its next customer.
NuScale’s first SMR project is set to be built on the site of a former coal-fired power plant in Doicești, Romania. It will be the first commercial deployment of NuScale’s SMR technology.
“We are excited to once again supply our steam generator tubes to Doosan Enerbility and NuScale Power. Discussions about the supply of steam generator tubes for SMRs are gaining momentum worldwide, and as pioneers in this field, we are well positioned for future projects,” said Nigel Haworth, president of Alleima’s Tube division.
“We are pleased to work with Alleima on the successful commercial deployment of SMRs,” added Jongdoo Kim, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Nuclear Business Group. “We greatly value Alleima’s extensive experience and its proven products and solutions in the field of steam generator tubes.”
