Teplárny Brno resumes heat deliveries as cold weather returns in Czechia

Teplárny Brno has resumed heat deliveries to households, institutions and businesses due to the return of cold weather. The originally city-owned company had suspended deliveries on 5 April, a record-early date, because of unusually warm weather. But it resumed them on 9 April, when temperatures began to fall and the weather forecast also warned of further cooling, Teplárny Brno Finance Director Přemysl Měchura told ČTK today.

„Teplárny Brno therefore resumed deliveries on 9 April, and they are expected to continue at least until the end of April. It is not that unusual for deliveries to be suspended and then resumed again a few days later. What is exceptional this year, however, is that this is happening in April. In previous years, interruptions and resumptions were more typical in May,“ Měchura said.

The so-called heating season, set by a decree of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, runs from September to May, with its start and end depending on the average daily temperature. Heat deliveries are suspended or ended after the average daily temperature exceeds 13 degrees for two consecutive days and, based on the weather outlook, a fall in the outdoor temperature is not expected. Heating plants resume deliveries if the average daily temperature falls below 13 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days and meteorologists do not forecast a rise in temperatures for the following day.

According to the forecast, cold weather in South Moravia, with daily highs of 10 to 13 degrees, is expected to last at least until the end of the week. The lowest morning temperatures could even dip slightly below zero on the night into Sunday.
