British government approves record-breaking Cottam Solar Project

The British government has approved Island Green Power’s plans to build the largest solar project to date in the country. The so-called Cottam Solar Project is planned for the border of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, with an installed capacity of 600 MWp. Several news outlets, including S&P and the BBC, reported the news.

The name Cottam refers to the former Cottam coal-fired power station, which has since been demolished and was shut down in 2019. The link to the former coal-fired power station is its connection to the grid, which the station previously used. The new solar farm is now expected to use it.

The power plant will span four sites covering a total area of 1150 hectares. The project consists of four ground-mounted solar power plants, a battery energy storage system and associated infrastructure. According to S&P, the battery storage facility is also expected to have a total capacity of 600 MW.

The project’s costs have not been disclosed, but its scale is in line with other large-scale solar projects in the United Kingdom. These typically involve substantial investment, often amounting to hundreds of millions of pounds.

Locals have concerns about the project

Despite opposition from local residents, the British government has classified the project as a “nationally significant infrastructure project” (NSIP), given the amount of electricity to be generated from this renewable source. Such projects benefit from a streamlined approval process, bypassing standard local planning requirements; examples typically include airports and major roads.

Councillors in the West Lindsey local government district have been opposing the project for some time, citing concerns about its impact. Locals are particularly worried about the effects on agricultural land and traffic problems. Councillor Tom Smith likened the relationship between West Lindsey district and the Cottam Solar Project to “the scapegoat for net zero”.

However, the decision by Energy Security Secretary Ed Miliband to approve the project may be final for them. “Solar power is one of the cheapest sources of energy, and we must make the most of the benefits of clean and secure energy,” Miliband said.
