Hořany in Czechia's Nymburk region consider investor's offer to build a wind farm outside the village

An investor could begin building the first tower of a wind farm near Hořany in the Nymburk region this year. The municipality, on whose land the wind farm is to be built, is now finalising a cooperation agreement with the investor. Municipal councillors are expected to approve it in the coming weeks. Hořany, with around 170 residents, could thus receive around 3.5 million crowns a year for its budget in the coming years, mayor Anděla Frumarová (Association of Independent Candidates) told ČTK.

Residents of the municipality were able to express their views on the wind farm project in a poll last December. They were asked: Do you agree that the municipality should continue to support the wind farm construction project? „The vast majority agreed. We are now waiting for the agreement, which is being finalised by the lawyers for both sides,“ Frumarová said.

The wind turbine is to be built about a kilometre from the municipality, near a pond on slightly elevated ground. „We have agreed on one for now, and possibly four in the future,“ Frumarová added. The income the wind turbine would bring to the municipality could be invested, for example, in repairing pavements or roads. The municipality is also planning to build new facilities at the sports ground.

Wind farms in Czechia generated 693 megawatt-hours of electricity last year, up 9.5 percent year on year. However, wind accounts for around one percent of electricity consumed in Czechia. The country is therefore significantly behind the European average, which rose to 19 percent last year. According to the Czech Wind Energy Association, two wind turbines are currently installed in the Central Bohemian Region, near the village of Pchery in the Kladno area.
