Norway delivered 109 billion m³ of gas to Europe last year, down 7% year on year

Exports of natural gas from Norway to Europe via pipelines reached a record level in December, but this was not enough to reverse the year-on-year decline of just under 7%, caused by lengthy outages last year. Reuters reported, citing Norwegian pipeline operator Gassco.

Norwegian pipeline operator Gassco delivered 109.1 billion m³ of natural gas to Europe via pipelines last year, nearly 8 billion m³ less than the year before. The year-on-year decline could not be offset even by the record monthly delivery of 11.1 billion m³ in December. According to Reuters, the previous monthly high was recorded in January 2017, at 10.9 billion m³.

Norway supplies natural gas via pipelines to the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium and since 2022, also to Poland via Denmark through the new Baltic Pipe.

Record deliveries to Germany

Despite the decline in annual deliveries to Europe, Germany received a record 56.2 billion m³ of natural gas last year, according to Reuters. This was made possible by a new interconnection with Denmark, which increased overall export capacity.

Deliveries to France, by contrast, fell by 22.5% last year to 13.8 billion m³. Deliveries to Belgium also fell (by 3.8% to 15 billion m³), as did those to the United Kingdom (by 13.6% to 24.1 billion m³).
