Third unit at Czechia’s Dukovany plant faces unplanned shutdown for repairs, safety not at risk

Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant will unexpectedly shut down its third unit today. A minor leak in one of the valves was detected during routine inspections, and energy workers will repair it in the coming days. Plant spokesman Radek Doležal told CTK. He said the incident does not affect nuclear safety. The other three Dukovany units are generating electricity at 100 percent.

Energy workers will disconnect the third unit from the grid this evening. “The planned duration of the shutdown will depend on how long the repair and subsequent inspections take,” the spokesman said.

The State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) said on its website that the planned reduction in the third unit’s output will begin at 20:00. “The unit will be disconnected from the electricity grid and cooled down so that the necessary repair can be carried out,” SÚJB said. The third Dukovany unit is expected to return to operation and reach nominal output on 6 November. “We are carefully supervising all activities,” SÚJB added.
