Germany increased share of electricity from renewables to 55 percent last year

Berlin, Jan. 3 (CTK correspondent) – Germany generated 55 percent of its electricity from renewable sources last year, up from 48.42 percent the year before. The Federal Network Agency, which acts as the regulator, announced this today. Germany thus generated more than half of its electricity from renewable sources for the first time, and aims to obtain at least 80 percent of its electricity this way by 2030.

„The 50-percent threshold for electricity generated from renewable energy sources has been surpassed. For the first time, more than half of our electricity comes from renewable sources,“ the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on X.

The Federal Network Agency specified that wind farms, especially onshore ones, accounted for the largest share of record renewable generation. Together, onshore and offshore wind farms supplied Germany with 31.1 percent of its total electricity generation last year. Solar power plants accounted for 12.1 percent, biomass for 8.4 percent, and the remaining 3.4 percent came from hydropower plants and other renewable sources.

Over the course of last year, Germany generated 251.2 terawatt-hours of electricity from renewable sources, 7.5 percent more year on year. Onshore wind farms produced roughly half of this total, specifically 118.7 terawatt-hours. Germany generated 197.2 terawatt-hours of electricity from conventional sources last year, 24 percent less than the year before.

Electrification powered by renewable energy is a pillar of Germany’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality. By 2030, Germany aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent compared with 1990 levels, and by 88 percent by 2040; it intends to achieve emissions neutrality by 2045. This means balancing carbon emissions with the amount removed from the atmosphere.
