Czech Temelín upgrades Unit 2 information system for tens of millions of crowns

The Temelín Nuclear Power Plant has upgraded the information system for Unit 2 at a cost of tens of millions of crowns. The system monitors hundreds of parameters. Among other things, it enables operators in the Unit 2 control room to see whether the level in the feedwater tank has fallen or the temperature of the turbogenerator bearings has risen. Energy engineers will carry out the same upgrade to the information system for Unit 1 next year. Temelín spokesperson Marek Sviták told journalists today.
According to the spokesperson, the information system is an important part of the power plant’s control system. It now operates in a modernized IT environment. „From the operators’ point of view, nothing will change in terms of the outputs. They will continue to receive information in the form they are used to. What has changed is the environment in which the system operates. It runs on new servers, and the software itself is also new,“ said Jan Kruml, director of the Temelín power plant.

This year, ČEZ has scheduled 271 investment projects at Temelín. It will spend 3.6 billion crowns on modernization and enhanced safety. Since the power plant began operating, ČEZ has invested more than 28 billion crowns in its modernization.
Temelín is the country’s largest electricity producer, covering roughly one-fifth of domestic consumption. Last year, it generated 16.29 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity; so far this year, it has generated 14.8 TWh.
