Heating season ends in Brno: Teplárny suspends heat supplies due to warmer weather

Due to warmer weather, Teplárny Brno is today suspending heat supplies to households, institutions and businesses in Brno. This heating season was on average half a degree colder than the previous one, Teplárny Brno said in a press release.

"Given the development of outdoor temperatures and their average daily values, we have decided to suspend the heating season. However, should it turn colder again, we are ready to promptly resume heat supplies in accordance with the decree," said Petr Fajmon, the heating company's CEO.

The heating season has so far lasted 224 days since 24 September last year, compared with a long-term average of 236 days. "The average temperature was 6.2 degrees Celsius, approximately half a degree lower than last year, which translated into higher consumption. Expected heat sales for the period from September 2025 to April 2026 are approximately 3.05 million GJ. This is roughly four percent higher year on year and also the highest figure of the past four heating seasons," said finance director Přemysl Měchura.

After a long time, the heating company recorded more significant frosts this year. In January, the average monthly temperature reached 1.9 degrees Celsius below zero, marking the first time since 2019 that the average temperature of any month had fallen below zero.

The heating period set by a decree of the Ministry of Industry and Trade runs from September to May, with its start and end depending on the average daily temperature. Heat supplies are suspended or ended after the average daily temperature rises above 13 degrees for two consecutive days and weather developments indicate that a drop in outdoor temperatures cannot be expected. The heating company will resume supplies if the average daily temperature falls below 13 degrees for two consecutive days and meteorologists do not forecast rising temperatures for the following day.

The weather forecast for the extended weekend expects temperatures between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius, and as high as 27 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Night-time temperatures will fall as low as five degrees. In South Moravia, the forecast expects minimal precipitation, although it may occur in thunderstorms.
