What to expect from electricity and gas prices in Czechia in 2025? E.ON Energie's view

Three years have passed since the collapse of Bohemia Energy, one of the largest energy suppliers. For hundreds of thousands of customers who chose three-year fixed-price contracts at the time, a key decision point is now approaching. At the same time, a considerable period has passed since the 2021 energy crisis, but the market is still feeling its after-effects. Added to this is growing pressure on the regulated component of electricity prices due to the necessary investment in infrastructure, which affects costs for households and businesses.
How will the energy market develop in 2025 and what will it bring customers? We asked several energy suppliers about this, and we would like to present their answers in the following series of interviews. The second interview was provided by Lukáš Paur, energy sales manager at E.ON Energie.
Which factors do you believe will have the greatest impact on electricity and gas prices in 2025?
The geopolitical situation and ongoing conflicts will have the greatest impact on electricity prices in the coming year. As for regulation, it may also be a partial driver, particularly for longer-term purchases, when we are talking about 2026-2027. New emissions allowances may affect electricity prices.
How do you see the long-term development of electricity and gas prices? Do you expect a return to pre-crisis levels, or rather lasting changes in the price structure?
It is a difficult question, because prices are very hard to predict. However, we expect prices to stabilise rather than decline over the long term. We are unlikely to return to pre-crisis prices.
Would you currently recommend that customers fix their energy prices?
Definitely. We certainly recommend fixed-price contracts to customers, and in our view the ideal term for which they can fix their prices is currently two years.
How do you ensure sufficient gas and electricity supplies? Can you outline your procurement process?
The purchasing strategy is a trade secret of every supplier, so naturally we will not disclose it. At E.ON, however, we generally try to purchase responsibly over longer time horizons in order to protect customers from unexpected price fluctuations, which we have demonstrated in recent years and continue to demonstrate.
How do you differ from other suppliers on the market? Do you offer customers any additional benefits that could increase their satisfaction or deliver savings?
We focus on products that add value for customers, such as boiler and heat pump servicing. These are products appreciated by our customers, and this year we are preparing to expand them further. In addition to commodity supply, where we ensure fair prices for clients, we can also offer our customers quality technical solutions such as solar PV, heat pumps and gas boilers.
Do you have specific recommendations for customers on how to secure a better energy price?
The cheapest electricity is always the electricity that is not consumed, so optimising consumption and changing behaviour should always come first. This can help significantly. If customers do not know how to go about it, they can find plenty of advice at E.ON Advisors. It is a project that brings together expert advice on its website on how to save energy as efficiently as possible. As for the price itself, customers should keep track of when their fixed-price periods end and, if necessary, contact their supplier for a new offer before their contract expires.
How do you prepare for possible future energy crises or supply disruptions? What plans and strategies do you have to ensure stable and secure supplies in the event of unexpected situations?
We try to purchase over long-term horizons in order to eliminate price fluctuations; however, we cannot fully influence the availability of commodities and supplies themselves.
How is your company preparing for the possible digitalisation of the energy sector, for example through the deployment of smart meters or involvement in smart grids?
We are preparing for new energy-sector challenges in terms of flexibility and sharing, so that we can offer customers products that will help them save energy. The market is not currently ready for this, but in the coming years we expect growing customer demand for these products. For example, this year we immediately introduced a new service in which we help interested parties manage their energy sharing.
Do you plan to offer new services, such as consumption management or data sharing with customers?
Yes, we are constantly moving forward and, given the changing nature of the energy sector, we are also responding by developing new products.
