Czech Břežany wind farm to be repowered after 20 years, with two new turbines replacing five old ones

Instead of five wind turbines, only two more powerful turbines will generate electricity at the wind farm in Břežany, near Znojmo, from next spring. WEB Větrná energie has begun a full repowering of the wind farm, which has been operating since 2005. Preparatory work began at the end of August, and the company officially launched the replacement today.

"So-called repowering represents a natural and technologically most sensible path for the development of wind energy. We are using a proven site with good wind conditions and, thanks to technological progress, can obtain many times more clean electricity from a smaller number of turbines," said Michaela Lužová, managing director of WEB.

Five Vestas V52 wind turbines, which have been generating electricity for more than 20 years, will be replaced by a single Vestas V150 machine with a capacity of 4.2 megawatts (MW). Its output will fully replace the existing turbines and it will use their cable connection. Generation capacity will be expanded by a second Vestas V150 turbine with a capacity of six MW, which will be connected via a new line to the substation in Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou.

"We originally considered an even greater increase in generation capacity, but there is insufficient grid capacity at the site, as we found when processing the application to increase capacity," Lužová added.

Work to upgrade access roads and lay cables began in August. At the turn of this year and next, workers will dismantle the old turbines and deliver and assemble the new ones. The repowering is scheduled to be completed next spring.
